ACEN hits 100% renewables, completes exit from fossil-heavy portfolio

ACEN Corp. has completed its transition to 100% renewable energy generation, marking one of the most decisive shifts yet by a major Philippine power producer away from fossil fuels and toward clean energy at scale.

The Ayala-led energy company disclosed today that it achieved the milestone earlier this year, capping nearly a decade-long transformation that radically reshaped its generation mix from coal-dominated to fully renewable .

In 2016, ACEN’s portfolio stood at about 1,000 megawatts (MW), with renewable energy accounting for only around 2%. Coal then formed the backbone of both the company’s assets and the broader regional power system. As climate risks and transition pressures intensified, ACEN redirected capital toward renewables and began a measured drawdown from coal, the company said.

That pivot has since expanded ACEN’s renewable footprint to over 7 gigawatts (GW) of attributable capacity, including operational projects, assets under construction, and committed developments. The Philippines remains its core and largest market, while its portfolio now spans Australia, Vietnam, India, and Lao PDR, with strategic investments in Indonesia and other countries.

“This milestone reflects our long-term strategy to align ACEN with the future of the energy system, while supporting decarbonization in a commercially disciplined way,” said ACEN President and CEO Eric Francia.

As of 2025, ACEN’s renewable portfolio includes 4,634 MW of solar, 1,957 MW of wind, 115 MW of geothermal, and 304 MW of battery energy storage capacity. The company said these assets are intended to support cleaner and more reliable power systems while driving economic activity in host communities.

ACEN said its next phase will focus not just on expanding capacity, but on enabling a “just, orderly, and inclusive energy transition,” as it targets net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in line with global climate goals .
