Basilan launches PHP 5.3-M solar project to power provincial center

The Basilan provincial government has launched a PHP 5.3 million solar power project to supply 24/7 electricity to the provincial government center in Lamitan City.

As reported by the Philippine News Agency, the 160-kilowatt solar system now provides round-the-clock power to all offices within the government complex. Governor Mujiv Hataman said the installation ensures continuous operations while allowing additional capacity for the soon-to-be-completed Sangguniang Panlalawigan building and gymnasium.

“Our power requirements right now are only at 52KW. So we still have excess power that can supply the new building of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the gymnasium that are nearing completion,” Hataman said.

The solar panels also serve as a parking shade, shielding vehicles from the weather. The project was funded through the provincial government’s 20% development fund.

“It is more energy efficient, the system is more sustainable, and the provincial government is more forward-looking. Practical, modern, and perfect for our efforts for clean energy,” Hataman concluded.

The project’s switch-on coincided with the lighting of Ramadan Mubarak decorations at the Capitol, starting off a night of celebration which included nightly activities and raffle draws.

As more local governments explore renewable energy solutions for public facilities, could similar solar installations strengthen energy resilience in other provincial centers?
