The Cebu Provincial Board (PB) has expressed support for the Municipality of Dumanjug’s direct partnership with the Spanish renewable energy firm Acciona Energia for the development of a solar power project in the area.
According to a report by Sunstar, the PB approved a resolution filed by 6th District Board Member Glenn Anthony Soco, endorsing the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) agreement between Acciona and the local government unit (LGU) of Dumanjug. Soco clarified that the resolution is a non-binding expression of support for the shift in Acciona’s approach, which was initially a joint venture with the Provincial Government of Cebu.
Acciona, a global energy company known for its investments in renewable infrastructure, previously partnered with the province to develop a 150-megawatt solar power facility in Daanbantayan. The company is now aiming to replicate the project in Dumanjug, this time directly collaborating with the town’s LGU.
The resolution follows from a May 20 meeting with the Provincial Economic Enterprise Council (EEC), where Acciona and Dumanjug Mayor Efren “Gungun” Gica discussed the proposed partnership. During the PB’s session, board members asked about the scope and location of the project, but Soco noted that the resolution does not contain technical specifics, focusing purely on supporting the investment in principle.
Soco emphasized that while the resolution does not imply any formal approval of the project, it reflects the PB’s willingness to back initiatives that promote renewable energy, job creation, and potentially more affordable electricity for Cebu.
