Clark becomes PH’s first sustainable EDGE airport

Clark International Airport (CRK) has achieved a historic milestone as the first airport in the Philippines and the second worldwide to secure the prestigious EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group.

This recognition, announced by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) on its official Facebook page, underscores CRK’s pioneering role in sustainable aviation infrastructure, offering a model for energy sector stakeholders and industry professionals aiming to integrate green practices into large-scale developments.

The certification, awarded by the Philippine Green Building Initiative, Inc. (PGBI), highlights CRK’s new passenger terminal building for its innovative design and resource efficiency. The terminal achieves 21% energy savings, 26% water conservation, and a 54% reduction in embodied energy in materials compared to standard local designs, according to PGBI’s assessment, reports SunStar Philippines.

“We are aiming not just for excellence and profitability, but for sustainability as well. This [EDGE certification] affirms our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and our duty to build with purpose,” said BCDA President and CEO Joshua Bingcang during the awarding ceremony at CRK’s new terminal, attended by representatives from IFC, Luzon International Premiere Airport Development Corp. (LIPAD), BCDA, and PGBI.

BCDA’s financial growth in 2024, driven by a PHP 13.9 billion joint venture, PHP 3.4 billion in service concession revenues from airport operations, and PHP 1.59 billion in lease income, reflects its mission to transform former military bases into economic hubs. “With our consistent push for innovation, strategic partnerships, and responsible development, BCDA remains steadfast in its mission to build smart, sustainable communities and deliver transformative infrastructure for generations to come,” said Bingcang in a statement posted on the BCDA website.

For energy sector professionals, CRK’s EDGE certification offers actionable insights into scalable, resource-efficient solutions that can drive sustainable growth in infrastructure projects. The airport’s success signals a broader commitment to integrating green technologies in the Philippines’ aviation and energy sectors.
