DOE backs local production of solar floaters for Laguna Lake project

The Department of Energy (DOE) has endorsed the local manufacturing of floaters for what is touted to become the largest floating solar project in the world, as SunAsia Energy partners with Tayson Industries and global technology firm Sungrow.

Newly appointed Energy Secretary Sharon Garin witnessed the signing of the supply agreement between China-based Sungrow and local plastic manufacturer Tayson Industries.

“The signing of the supply agreement between Sungrow and Tayson Industries is a milestone in the country’s decarbonisation journey,” said Garin. “It signifies our readiness to lead a future with a clear footprint in industrial innovation and progress.”

Under the deal, Tayson Industries will set up a dedicated production line to manufacture high-density polyethylene (HDPE) floaters—mounting structures for solar panels—to be deployed in SunAsia Energy’s Laguna Lake project.

Sungrow, a leading global technology provider headquartered in Hefei, China, has gigawatt-scale installations of floating solar systems across Asia and Europe. The firm vetted Tayson Industries to meet the technical and logistical demands of the Laguna Lake development.

Floaters made of HDPE are designed to endure strong winds and heavy rainfall, making them suitable for deployment across the country’s typhoon-prone water bodies.

Garin underscored the broader economic impact of the project, citing job creation, technology transfer, and capacity building. “The factory, once built, represents the fruits of enabling policies, investors’ confidence and international collaboration,” she added.

SunAsia Energy CEO Tetchi Capellan expressed the company’s long-term vision: “SunAsia Energy remains committed to move forward and stay on course with its mission to decarbonise the electricity system in the country.”
