DOE cracks down on gas stations imposing excessive price adjustments

The Department of Energy (DOE) has cracked down on gasoline stations that have allegedly imposed excessive fuel price increases outside of the government mandated adjustments, issuing 55 Show Cause Orders across the country.

The enforcement comes as the department intensifies its monitoring of the fuel sector following rising prices due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Through its Oil Industry Management Bureau and field offices in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the DOE, since March 6, has inspected fuel retail outlets across the country with the help of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and local government units (LGUs).

71 of these retail outlets were caught implementing price adjustments beyond the levels released by the agency on March 6.

As a direct consequence, the DOE has issued 55 Show Cause Orders directing the involved companies to explain the alleged violations in writing and under oath within 24 hours.

Failure to comply with the order could lead to the suspension or cancellation of Certificates of Compliance, and could even lead to the cancellation of the involved companies’ Mayor’s permits or business permits.

Additionally, all violators will face criminal charges under Batas Pambansa Blg. 33, as amended, and the Oil Deregulation Law (Republic Act No. 8479).

The enforcement actions come after President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. warned businesses against exploiting rising fuel prices amidst global oil market volatility.

In an earlier announcement addressing the impact of global fuel price movements, the President stressed that hoarding and profiteering are illegal and urged businesses not to take advantage of consumers during such trying periods.

The DOE said monitoring and inspection activities will continue nationwide to ensure that fuel retailers comply with pricing rules and operate in accordance with government directives.

The department also encouraged the public to report suspected violations through the eGovPH App, Hotline 8888, local government units, or directly to the DOE’s Consumer Welfare and Promotion Office.

How important is stricter enforcement of fuel pricing rules in protecting consumers during periods of global oil price volatility?
