DOE Secures PHP57.4M from PCSO to Fund Clean Energy Projects

The Department of Energy (DOE) has received PHP57.4 million from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) to support the country’s push for clean energy development.

The amount, which represents PCSO’s 2023 contribution to the Renewable Energy Trust Fund (RETF), was formally turned over to the DOE on July 21. Under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008, 1.5 percent of PCSO’s net annual income is allocated to the RETF to help fund projects that promote the development and adoption of renewable energy technologies.

“This contribution is not just a financial boost—it’s a step forward in expanding energy access, innovation, and sustainability,” said DOE Undersecretary Rowena Guevara, who accepted the check on behalf of the department.

The RETF is managed by the DOE through its RETF Committee. This committee was created following Department Circular No. DC2022-06-0018 outlining guidelines for fund sourcing, accounting, and auditing.

To ensure the effective use of the fund, the DOE signed a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD). The collaboration supports various research and development projects, including ones on sustainable aviation fuel production, renewable energy mapping systems, and solar photovoltaic (PV) market assessments.

The DOE emphasized that this milestone showcases the government’s continued commitment to building a cleaner and more secure energy future through strategic investments and agency collaboration.
