The Department of Energy (DOE) and the Provincial Government of Siquijor have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to launch the Solar Solutions for Government: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Public Buildings Program, in a push to address the province’s persistent power supply challenges.
Signed on June 27 by DOE Officer-in-Charge Sharon S. Garin and Siquijor Governor Jake Vincent S. Villa, the agreement commits both parties to reduce electricity consumption in government facilities and ease pressure on the local grid through the adoption of solar and energy-efficient technologies.
“This MOA is more than just a formal document, it is a statement of shared commitment and action,” said Garin. “In the face of the power supply challenges here in Siquijor, we are choosing not to wait for the future, we are taking meaningful steps today.”
The program aligns with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to pursue sustainable energy solutions for the island. It includes the installation of solar photovoltaic systems, energy-efficient lighting, inverter-type air-conditioning units, and smart meters in government buildings.
“Every kilowatt-hour we save in our government facilities is a kilowatt-hour that can help power homes and businesses here in Siquijor,” Garin added. “This is not just about conserving electricity, it’s about ensuring that our limited energy resources are used wisely and benefit those who need it the most.”
Under the MOA, the DOE will provide technical assistance, conduct energy audits, and install the necessary systems. The province is expected to assign a focal person to coordinate the program’s rollout.
Earlier in the day, DOE officials also met with the Province of Siquijor Electric Cooperative, Inc. (PROSIELCO) and the Siquijor Power Corporation (SIPCOR) to explore long-term strategies for addressing the province’s energy supply issues.
