DOE vows full coordination with Pagbilao Energy after power plant fire

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin expressed condolences to the family of the personnel who lost his life and extended prayers for the recovery of nine others injured in the October 31 fire incident at Unit 3 of the Pagbilao Power Station in Quezon.

“We also continue to pray for the full and swift recovery of the nine (9) personnel who sustained injuries,” Garin said in a statement issued on November 2.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said three of the affected personnel were from Therma Luzon, Inc. (TLI), while seven were from contractors. All injured workers were immediately brought to the nearest medical facility and are reported to be in stable condition.

According to Garin, the DOE has directed Pagbilao Energy Corporation (PEC) to “attend without let-up to the needs of all those currently in the hospital, ensuring that they receive comprehensive medical attention, proper care, and full support.”

“We commend PEC for its prompt response and immediate mobilization of resources following the incident,” Garin said, adding that the department expects continued coordination among PEC, medical teams, local authorities, and the families of the affected personnel.

She assured the public that the DOE “will continue to coordinate with PEC and other concerned agencies to ensure that proper assistance is provided and that a thorough investigation proceeds.”

Garin also said the department is ready to assist in recovery efforts both for the affected personnel and the power plant’s rehabilitation, emphasizing that worker welfare will remain a top priority.

“The DOE also commits to assisting, where appropriate, in the recovery efforts for both the affected personnel and the power plant, ensuring that necessary support mechanisms are in place as operations move toward rehabilitation,” she said.

The DOE will provide verified updates as they become available.
