The significant influx of lithium battery energy storage in power systems has brought substantial growth. Yet, this progress has been littered with setbacks, particularly the increasing frequency of safety incidents related to Energy Storage Systems (ESS).
In the past year, nearly 20 fires and explosions linked to ESS power plants were recorded globally. Past fire incidents in the United States and South Korea also caught the attention of prominent media outlets such as Bloomberg, Greentech Media, and The Korea Times.
And in order to advance the cause of sustainability within the industry, the question of safety must be addressed immediately.
Global leading inverter and energy storage solution supplier, Sungrow, offers PowerTitan, its liquid-cooled energy storage solution designed for utility-scale solar projects, equipped with advanced technologies that prevent fire-related incidents.
Sungrow’s global ESS projects have maintained a clean record with no reported cases of fires or explosions.
In taking greater heights in the ESS industry, Sungrow has launched PowerTitan 2.0 this year, which will allow solar systems to pack MWh of clean energy in a compact 20-feet container with less carbon footprint, resulting in lower LCOS and higher yields of power.
The PowerTitan fuses energy from electronics, electrochemistry, and power grid support technologies, offering an extensive safety design encompassing cell, electrical, and system levels that align with Sungrow’s strict safety guidelines.
To help mitigate the risk of battery fires and minimize the chances of recurrence, the PowerTitan battery storage solutions include smoke, temperature, and combustible gas detectors, as well as water-based and gas fire suppression systems.
The battery storage also incorporated Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its system, allowing it to detect system changes and provide advance warnings before the system levels deplete. Its battery modules and electronics are also covered for two-hour fire protection.
With four layers of protection against excessive electric current and dangerous arcs, the risk of electrical hazards is minimized.
As a part of a newer-developed system, the PowerTitan can easily detect faults and respond quickly by offering safe maintenance.
Sungrow emphasized the importance of securing energy storage systems not only from personal and property risks but also from issues against grid connection, operation and maintenance, and yield. The company stressed that security throughout the energy storage chain is challenging, especially “during the current outbreak phase.”
