ERC boosts regulatory capacity through energy storage systems training

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has improved its technical and regulatory capabilities through a training session on Energy Storage Systems (ESS) held on October 24, 2025.

With the theme “Future-Proofing the Philippine Grid: Institutionalizing Battery Energy Storage System and Integrated Renewable Energy and Storage System Technologies,” the program aimed to enhance the ERC’s understanding of emerging storage technologies and their potential in modernizing the power grid.

The session was attended by personnel from various ERC services and facilitated by the Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA). The training was divided into four parts: an overview of ESS technology in the Philippines, identification of regulatory gaps, international best practices, and policy pathways with recommendations for implementation.

ERC Chairperson and CEO Atty. Francis Saturnino C. Juan stressed the importance of continuous learning and capacity building within the Commission to ensure effective regulation amid rapid technological shifts.

“We need to act fast and keep up with developments in the energy sector. We must level up our practice for better regulation so we can cater to what is needed of us and, ultimately, promote the interests of our consumers,” said Chairperson Juan.
