ERC Greenlights PHP2.8B Tanay Wind Interconnection, Orders NGCP to Fast-Track Grid Upgrade

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved Alternergy’s PHP2.8 billion interconnection facility for its 128-megawatt Tanay Rizal Wind Power Project.

The decision allows Alternergy Tanay Wind Corporation (ATWC), a subsidiary of Alternergy Holdings Corporation, to build and operate a dedicated point-to-point transmission facility that includes two double-circuit 500 kV transmission lines and a 33/500 kV switchyard with a 150 MVA transformer.

The ERC also cleared an innovative two-stage interconnection scheme. As an interim solution, the Tanay project will connect through a bus-in to the existing San Jose-Tayabas 500 kV transmission line in Luzon, while awaiting completion of the Baras 500 kV Substation of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). In its ruling, the ERC directed NGCP to expedite the filing and completion of the Baras substation to serve as the final connection.

“This is an innovative interconnection scheme that enables our Tanay Wind Power Project to meet its commitment under the Administration’s Green Energy Auction 2 (GEA 2),” said Gerry P. Magbanua, ATWC president. “We are thankful to NGCP for its collaboration in ensuring our timely dispatch of green power to the grid while awaiting the final connection scheme.”

Magbanua also thanked the ERC, led by Chairman Francis Saturnino Juan, for the back-to-back approvals of Alternergy’s wind projects in Tanay and Alabat. “With NGCP and ERC’s support, our interconnection schemes for our Tanay and Alabat Wind Power Projects demonstrate Alternergy’s capability to design innovative solutions to critical transmission access for renewable energy infrastructure,” he said.

The Tanay Wind Power Project is part of Alternergy’s renewable portfolio and its “Road to 500 MW” target by 2026.

With regulators moving faster to clear projects and push grid upgrades, the question now is: will these decisions translate to smoother renewable integration and more reliable power for Filipino consumers?
