Feasibility Study for LNG Supply Conducted in Lamitan City

PNOC-Ilijan

Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) officials met with Lamitan City Mayor Roderick H. Furigay on April 8 to assess the potential of establishing a small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (ssLNG) supply system in the city. This event was led by PNOC President Oliver B. Butalid and National Power Corporation SPUG-MOD Manager Engr. Yahcob H. Darayan. Together, they brought various representatives from both agencies and prospective investors.

The meeting centered on PNOC’s broader strategic objective of expanding the country’s gas market, with a particular focus on reaching geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDAs) across the Visayas and Mindanao. As part of the feasibility study, a site inspection of the Rose Power Plant in Lamitan was conducted.

This was part of PNOC’s initiative to boost energy security in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), announced early this month. PNOC has reached out to various consultancy services to conduct a comprehensive pre-feasibility study that will evaluate the technical, economic, regulatory, and environmental viability of introducing ssLNG infrastructure.

What do you think of PNOC’s initiative to bring ssLNG infrastructure to BARMM? Is this the right step towards a more sustainable and reliable power grid?
