First Gen supplies renewable energy to Makati hotel under GEOP

A Makati City hotel has shifted its electricity supply to renewable energy after entering into a power supply partnership with First Gen Corporation. This marks one of the early adoptions of clean power among hospitality establishments in the central business district (CBD) of the city.

Valero Grand Suites by Swiss-Belhotel, a 271-room hotel located in Makati’s CBD, is now sourcing its electricity from renewable energy facilities operated by First Gen, following the signing of an agreement late last year.

Under the arrangement, electricity supplied to the hotel will come from a geothermal power plant in Bicol operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a subsidiary of First Gen. The shift forms part of the hotel’s longer-term sustainability direction under Swiss-Belhotel International.

The transition was enabled through the government’s Green Energy Option Program (GEOP), which allows qualified electricity consumers to choose renewable energy suppliers. Valero Grand Suites is among the first hotels in the Makati CBD to transition under the program.

GEOP is designed to promote wider renewable energy use by allowing consumers with an average peak demand of at least 100 kilowatts over the past 12 months to select their preferred renewable energy provider. Participation in the program has been growing among commercial and business establishments.

The move also aligns with efforts by hotels to reduce reliance on fossil fuels while responding to increasing demand for environmentally responsible accommodations that maintain service quality and accessibility.

First Gen owns and operates a portfolio of renewable energy power plants using geothermal, hydro, solar, and wind resources, with a combined capacity of 1,700 megawatts.

As more commercial buildings explore renewable energy sourcing under government programs, how quickly will clean power adoption expand across major business districts?
