Former Energy Usec. Jose “Jay” Layug, Jr. joins Cebu-based Vivant Corporation as its new Independent Director.
Based on Vivant’s disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Monday, Layug began his stint with the Garcia-Escaño family-led energy firm on Friday, March 18. The former Energy official will chair the board’s Corporate Governance and Related-Party Transaction Committee, while sitting as a member of the Audit, Finance, and Board Risk Oversight Committees
While at the Department of Energy from 2010-2012, Layug headed its Renewable Energy Management Bureau, Energy Resources Development Bureau, Energy Utilization Management Bureau, Oil Industry Management Bureau, and legal services. Layug brought with him his experience as Legal Manager of Chevron Malampaya LLC from 2007-2010.
Based on his LinkedIn profile, Layug served as the Chairman of the National Renewable Energy Board (NREB) from 2017-2019, and is currently a senior partner at the Puno & Puno Law Office. Layug’s NREB successor Atty. Monalisa Dimalanta recently joined Aboitiz Power Corporation as its compliance officer.
Layug obtained his Bachelor of Science in Business Economics and Bachelor of Laws degrees, both from the University of the Philippines (UP)-Diliman. He currently sits as Dean of the University of Makati (UMak) School of Law. Aside from UMak, Layug teaches at the UP College of Law.
Vivant on Monday also reported a 23% profit increase in 2021 compared to the previous year. Before that, it appointed Emil Andre Garcia as President and Arlo Sarmiento as CEO. Both took over on February 7 from Ramontito Garcia, who previously held both posts.
