Fuel Prices May Rise This Week, DOE Warns

Motorists may face higher pump prices this week, with the Department of Energy (DOE) estimating a potential increase of about PHP 1.00 per liter for gasoline and PHP 1.50 per liter for diesel starting Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The DOE said the adjustments reflect developments in the international oil market, where supply remains tight amid geopolitical tensions and production cuts.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC+) announced on September 7 a limited output hike of just 137,000 barrels per day beginning October, which is far below the usual monthly increases of over 400,000 bpd. The move has added pressure to already constrained global supply.

The situation has been aggravated by the renewed escalation of the Russia–Ukraine conflict, which disrupted about 17% of Russia’s refining capacity and damaged the Druzhba pipeline, which is a critical conduit for European energy flows.

Further compounding volatility, the United States reinstated sanctions on 13 entities and eight vessels involved in illegal Iranian oil shipments, thus effectively targeting roughly 1 million barrels per day of exports.

The DOE assured the public that it is closely monitoring market movements and working with stakeholders to help manage the impact on consumers. The agency also renewed its call for motorists to practice fuel-saving measures. These include proper vehicle maintenance, avoiding unnecessary idling, and efficient trip planning.

Do you think the government should expand subsidies or other relief measures to cushion consumers from rising fuel prices?
