Senator Win Gatchalian is urging the Department of Energy (DOE) to guarantee that scheduled maintenance of natural gas plants proceeds as planned and does not result in extended shutdowns.
Gatchalian, vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, made the appeal after the DOE announced that South Premiere Power Corporation and Excellent Energy Resources, Inc.—jointly owned by MERALCO PowerGen, San Miguel Global Power, and Aboitiz Power—would temporarily shut down their facilities over the weekend.
“We recognize that preventive maintenance is critical to deter unplanned downtime, which adversely affects businesses and inconveniences energy consumers. We are hoping that the DOE would be able to ensure that this activity would not cause undue loss of power,” Gatchalian said.
He stressed that while preventive maintenance is necessary to prevent unexpected breakdowns, any delays in the process could disrupt businesses and burden consumers.
The senator urged the DOE to closely oversee the maintenance schedule to prevent prolonged power supply disruptions.
Gatchalian also echoed the DOE’s reminder for consumers to adopt energy conservation practices to help stabilize supply levels and avoid potential power shortages.
Encouraging responsible energy use, he noted that such efforts would not only contribute to maintaining electricity availability but also help consumers lower their power bills.
With growing concerns over energy security, Gatchalian’s call highlights the need for both government oversight and consumer participation in ensuring a stable power supply.
