Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has urged the government to release the P150-million in fuel subsidies for farmers and fisherfolks amidst escalating fuel prices brought about by the tension in the Middle East.
The senator went on to point out that funds for the subsidies have already been collected under the 2025 General Appropriations Act, but still remain unused.
Under the law, PHP 75 million has been allotted to the Department of Agriculture for fuel assistance for the use of postharvest facilities and other fuel-based farm implements. Meanwhile, another PHP 75 million in fuel subsidies is allocated for fisherfolk to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
Gatchalian noted how these funds have not been used since 2025 and could still be disbursed as part of the continuing budget.
“A timely release of the subsidy would provide immediate financial relief to the country’s most vulnerable sectors amid expectations of higher operational costs,” Gatchalian said.
He went on to say that releasing these subsidies for the benefits of farmers and fisherwolk would also ripple over to maintaining stable food supply and prices.
“Kung matutulungan natin sa lalong madaling panahon ang ating mga magsasaka at mangingisda, magiging malaking bagay ito para masigurong maayos ang presyo at suplay ng pagkain sa bansa,” he said.
Gatchalian also pointed out how the government could tap additional funding from the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program if further support is needed.
Should the government expand fuel subsidy programs to protect agriculture and fisheries from rising energy costs?
