Geothermal Power Now Fuels Wilmar’s Gingoog Plant in First Gen Supply Deal

Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc., the local unit of global agribusiness giant Wilmar International, has shifted part of its operations to geothermal energy under a power supply deal with First Gen Corporation, marking a key step in the company’s efforts to cut operational emissions while maintaining reliable industrial output.

Under the agreement signed on January 21, 2026, First Gen will supply geothermal power sourced from its Mt. Apo Geothermal Plant to Wilmar’s 24/7 processing facility in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental. The plant handles copra crushing, processing, and refining of edible oils, operations that require continuous and reliable electricity.

Wilmar said energy use remains one of the largest contributors to its operational emissions, making the shift to renewable power a practical lever for decarbonization.

“Our partnership with First Gen reinforces our commitment to responsible operations and climate action while ensuring reliable power supply to support our operations,” said David Lim, chief financial officer of Wilmar Edible Oils Philippines Inc. “Since energy is typically one of the major sources of operational emissions, shifting to renewable energy offers a practical, measurable way to reduce environmental impact while supporting long-term business continuity and cost stability.”

The move positions geothermal energy as a key enabler for industrial decarbonization, particularly for facilities that operate around the clock. Unlike intermittent renewable sources, geothermal power provides baseload electricity that can meet constant demand without compromising reliability.

“Geothermal power is the only renewable energy source that has baseload capability which can support the electricity demand of industries, while ensuring a reduction in carbon footprint,” said Carlo Vega, chief customer engagement officer of First Gen. “We remain committed to supporting Wilmar as it continues to embed sustainability across its operations in the Philippines.”

First Gen currently operates more than 1,700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity nationwide, drawn from geothermal, wind, solar, and hydro facilities. To complement variable renewable supply and support grid stability, the company also holds a 40% interest in four gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of 2,017 MW, alongside majority owner Prime Infrastructure Capital Inc.

The Wilmar supply deal reflects growing interest among energy-intensive industries in securing low-carbon power sources that do not sacrifice operational reliability. As companies face increasing pressure to reduce emissions across their value chains, baseload renewables such as geothermal are emerging as a viable solution for continuous manufacturing processes.

First Gen said it plans to further expand its renewable and low-carbon portfolio over the next five years, targeting total generating capacity of up to 13 gigawatts as it supports both grid requirements and corporate decarbonization goals.
