Heathrow’s 20-Hour Shutdown Shows Why Moisture in Transformers Can’t Be Ignored

In March 2025, Heathrow Airport shut down for nearly 20 hours after a transformer failed and caught fire, disrupting over 200,000 passengers.

Investigators from the UK’s National Energy System Operator (NESO) traced the root cause to moisture.

For energy operators, the lesson is simple: moisture is among the biggest risks for transformers. It speeds up insulation aging, lowers performance, and can trigger failures with major economic and safety impacts.

The warning is timely for the Philippines as the country targets 50% renewable energy by 2040. With more solar, wind, and battery storage plants being built, grid stability depends on the reliability of transformers.

Vaisala, a global leader in industrial measurement, has developed moisture monitoring sensors widely used across energy markets to detect early risks before they escalate. To help the industry, Vaisala has released a free guide on moisture management in transformers. It explains the science, monitoring strategies, and real-world preventive practices to safeguard equipment and avoid costly outages.
