Hedcor Inc. is raising the capacity of its Bineng run-of-river hydropower plants in La Trinidad, Benguet to 19 megawatts (MW).
The former 5.48-MW Bineng plant is composed of Bineng 1, Bineng 2, and Bineng 2B, which is expected to generate an additional 42.7 kilowatts per hour (kWh), or almost 62 million kWh yearly.
“There was a potential to increase the capacity in order to better serve the needs of the grid, so we proceeded with it,” Hedcor said in a statement.
The project is expected to go online in 2018.
The Bineng hydropower plant is one of the first plants to be established by Hedcor in Benguet. It was established in 1991. The plant harnesses the water from the Balili River that flows north of Baguio City to La Trinidad.
Meanwhile, conveyance pipes of the Bineng Hydros serve as the walkways of farmers in the province. The power company allows farmers to tap these pipes for their irrigation.
Barangay Bineng and the La Trinidad municipality has been partners with Hedcor for almost 25 years.
Hedcor Inc. is a unit of the Aboitiz Power Corp.
