Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla says that the suspension of the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) chairperson Monalisa C. Dimalanta should be resolved immediately to prevent delays in critical energy projects.
In a report by Business World, Department of Energy (DOE) secretary Lotilla said that the ERC plays a vital role in advancing both conventional and renewable energy initiatives, and decisions that are currently pending at the regulatory body need prompt attention.
A suspension that was issued by the Ombudsman on August 27 was the result of a complaint filed by the National Association of Electricity Consumers for Reforms, Inc.
The group indicted the ERC for failing to properly recalculate rates set by Manila Electric Company (MERALCO), claiming it was contrary to the public’s interest and the ERC’s Performance-Based Regulation goals.
Dimalanta, suspended for six months without pay, faced charges including grave misconduct, abuse of authority, and gross neglect of duty. She has stepped down while exploring legal options with her team.
Despite her suspension, the ERC’s operations will continue, and an officer-in-charge is expected to be appointed by the Office of the Executive Secretary.
Lotilla emphasized the importance of the ERC’s role in facilitating the projects and is hopeful that the situation will be resolved swiftly to avoid disruptions.
