Mapúa MCL Completes Transition to 100% Renewable Energy in Partnership with ACEN RES

Reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and climate action, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) has officially switched to 100% renewable energy. This move was made possible through a partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail supply arm of the Ayala Group’s energy platform, ACEN.

The shift means that all of Mapúa MCL’s campus operations, everything from classroom lighting and laboratory equipment to IT infrastructure and blended learning platforms, are now powered by clean energy drawn entirely from ACEN’s portfolio of renewable power plants across the country. This milestone is part of the institution’s wider goal to reduce its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions by 5% by the end of 2025, and by 10% the following year.

Driving this transition is Mapúa MCL’s Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), which is a dedicated unit established in 2024 to integrate sustainability principles into campus operations and academic programs. The IGS played a critical role in assessing ACEN RES as a suitable partner, ensuring that the transition was aligned with both technical requirements and institutional climate goals.

“The ceremonial switch showcases Mapúa MCL’s commitment to reducing our carbon footprint to the minimum level possible for our institution’s operations,” said Assistant Vice President Rolando V. Bitor, who also serves as IGS Director. “The use of electrical energy contributes significantly to our CO₂e emissions. By sourcing power from renewable plants, we’re making our reduction targets not only realistic, but achievable.”

Mapúa MCL relies heavily on electricity to support its digital infrastructure and hybrid learning systems. With renewable energy facilities spanning Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, ACEN RES offers a stable supply that supports both operational needs and environmental values.

“We are proud to support Mapúa MCL’s bold shift to renewable energy,” said Engr. Sheila Mina, Vice President and Head of Account Management at ACEN RES. “Educational institutions have a powerful role to play in shaping a low-carbon future. By choosing renewable energy, Mapúa MCL demonstrates strong leadership and sets a valuable example for others in the academic sector.”

Mapúa MCL’s transition to clean energy directly aligns with several UN SDGs, specifically SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). With the infrastructure and partnerships now in place, the institution is confident in both meeting and likely exceeding its short-term emission reduction targets, while fostering a culture of environmental responsibility for the long term.
