President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has expressed strong support for the ongoing Phase 4 drilling operations of the Malampaya gas field. He hails the project as essential to maintaining Luzon’s energy supply and ensuring stable electricity costs for millions of Filipinos.
Based on his Facebook post, during a recent inspection of the Noble Viking drilling rig off the coast of Palawan, the President stressed the critical nature of the initiative. The Phase 4 campaign, seeks to tap additional gas reserves that could extend Malampaya’s lifespan to 2034 from its otherwise estimated end-year of 2029.
“I flew over the Noble Viking today to see the progress first-hand and to show the government’s full support in getting this project done on time,” the President said.
Malampaya currently supplies around 20 percent of Luzon’s electricity demand. It powers homes, schools, hospitals, offices, and industrial facilities. As the Philippines’ only domestic natural gas source since 2001, it helps reduce dependence on imported fuels.
The Malampaya consortium driving the Phase 4 project is led by Prime Energy (a subsidiary of Prime Infrastructure Capital, Inc.), UC38 LLC of the Udenna Group, and the Philippine National Oil Company-Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC).
