The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is accelerating its advanced metering program through a strategic partnership with US-based Itron, Inc., a global leader in energy and water resource management.

Under the collaboration, Itron will deploy its Gen5 AMI solution, an open, IPv6-based platform enabling real-time, two-way communication between Meralco and its customers. The system is designed to speed up outage detection and restoration, improve billing accuracy, and give consumers greater visibility and control over their energy use.

The initial rollout will cover 73,000 endpoints across Metro Manila, with a multi-year expansion planned to reach Meralco’s broader service areas. The partnership supports the Philippines’ transition to a digital, efficient, and sustainable energy grid.

 “Our proven, scalable Gen5 solution is upgrading the way Meralco delivers, measures, and manages electricity. It supports multiple meter brands, giving Meralco the flexibility to scale without vendor lock-in, future-proofing deployments and reducing costs,” John Marcolini, Itron’s Senior Vice President of Networked Solutions, said.

 “This collaboration is pivotal in our AMI journey. With Itron’s Gen5 solution, we are building a smart grid that enhances our customer-centricity while supporting the country’s digital economy through faster outage response, more accurate billing, and better energy visibility,” Meralco Executive Vice President and COO Ronnie L. Aperocho added.
