As demand for hyperscale data centers grows in the Philippines, Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) reported it has completed and energized a 115-kV switching station for ST Telemedia Global Data Centres Philippines’ (STT GDC) Polaris Data Center in Quezon City.
The project, built in collaboration with MIESCOR, a subsidiary, and Harmonic System Inc., ensures uninterrupted power and operational efficiency reinforcing the country’s position as an emerging digital infrastructure hub.
Meralco’s energy services unit, MSERV, meanwhile supplied and installed key data center electrical equipment such as high-voltage gas-insulated switchgears, and oil-immersed transformers, and medium-voltage dry-type transformers.
The switching station, housed within STT GDC’s Polaris Data Center, is the first of its kind in Meralco’s franchise area, featuring a dual-feed design to provide a highly reliable power source for the hyperscale facility. The initiative aligns with the Philippine government’s socio-economic agenda, particularly on energy security and digital transformation, as the country attracts more investments in data-driven industries.
“This is a statement to the international community that the Philippines can build a world-class infrastructure that shows that we are more than ready to support the enabling of a digital Philippines,” STT GDC Philippines President and Chief Executive Officer Carlo E. Malana said.
STT GDC, a joint venture of Globe Telecom, Ayala Corporation, and Singapore-based STT GDC, operates data centers in Metro Manila, Cavite, and Davao.
“Meralco works closely with data center operators such as STT GDC to cater to their unique requirements. We are fully committed to providing reliable power and energizing critical infrastructure that will support the growth and development of the hyperscale industry in the country,” Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Ronnie L. Aperocho concluded.
The successful commissioning of the switching station puts STT GDC in a better position to further expand its data center operations, given Meralco’s robust energy infrastructure.
