The Department of Energy’s (DOE) goal of 100 percent electrification can be achieved through the Manila Electric Co.’s (Meralco) prepaid electricity service, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said.
The chairman said electricity must be provided to poor communities like Smokey Mountain, Payatas, and Muntinlupa.
“These are the people President Rodrigo Duterte promised to serve,” he said.
According to data from the DOE, Luzon has a 90 percent electricity connection, while Visayas and Mindanao have 92 percent and 72 percent, respectively.
Meralco has been tasked to look at potential relocation sites for safety measures.
“Let us not wait for the local government units to resolve problems. Let us help especially the marginalized. I want the general public to feel that the government is doing something to better their lives by providing adequate electricity with lower rates so they will be able to afford other necessities such as more food on the table,” Cusi said.
