Meralco issues public warning after cable theft attempt disrupts power to 8,000 customers

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) renewed its warning against power cable theft after an attempted incident in Quezon City caused a temporary power interruption affecting nearly 8,000 customers.

The incident occurred on January 4 at around 3AM, when a 37-year-old man attempted to steal power cables connected to Meralco facilities. Electricity service in the affected areas was restored by 7AM. after repair works were completed.

Meralco said the suspect sustained flashover burns and fell from a tree during the attempted theft. He was immediately brought to a hospital and was reported to be in critical condition.

“This incident underscores the grave dangers of stealing power cables and electrical facilities. Beyond the inconvenience caused by service interruptions, these acts pose life threatening risks due to the high voltage of Meralco facilities,” said Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Networks Froilan J. Savet.

“Any contact with energized facilities can lead to electric shock, severe injuries, or even death,” he added, urging the public to help ensure safe and reliable electricity service by reporting suspicious activity involving Meralco facilities.

The company also reminded the public that wire theft is a criminal offense under Republic Act No. 7832, or the Anti-Electricity Pilferage Act, which carries penalties including imprisonment and fines.

Meralco said incidents such as cable theft not only endanger lives but also disrupt power supply and strain resources needed to maintain reliable electricity service.
