Meralco on full alert as tropical cyclone Uwan nears Philippines

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has placed all its crews and personnel on full alert as Tropical Cyclone Fung-Wong, locally named Uwan, approaches the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The company said its teams are strategically positioned across its franchise area to respond to possible power outages or electrical emergencies caused by the expected strong winds and heavy rainfall.

“Meralco crews, personnel, and response teams are on standby 24/7 and strategically positioned to address electricity service concerns,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications. “More importantly, we are enjoining the public to stay safe and take extra precautions, especially in flood-prone areas where the risk of electrical accidents is higher.”

Meralco reminded customers to observe safety measures during heavy rains and flooding. These include switching off the main power source when water starts to rise, unplugging appliances, and ensuring all electrical devices are completely dry before use. The company also advised residents to consult a licensed electrician before reconnecting power to equipment that may have been exposed to floodwaters.

Customers may report electricity concerns through the My Meralco app, the company’s official Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) accounts, by texting 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211, or by calling the Meralco Hotline 16211.

Meralco assured customers that it remains committed to ensuring public safety and service reliability amid the severe weather conditions.
