Meralco’s Innovation Month 2025 turned the spotlight on the company’s bold vision for the Philippines’ energy future. From AI-driven customer solutions to advanced grid technologies, the month-long celebration in November showcased how the nation’s largest electricity distributor is redefining what it means to deliver power in the digital age.
A central highlight was the IDOL Hackathon, where 51 students from eight universities competed to develop practical, technology-driven solutions for the country’s energy challenges. The winning team, Koryinti, proposed “Revolt,” a centralized e-mobility ecosystem integrating charger mapping, trip routing, and charging reservations, pointing to a future where consumers are not just energy users, but active participants—“prosumers”—in the grid.

Driving an Intelligent, Customer-Focused Grid
Innovation Month wasn’t just about competition—it reflected Meralco’s larger transformation strategy, aiming to build a smarter, safer, and more customer-centric grid. Over the years, Meralco has invested in technologies like its Wireless Private Network (WPN) for enhanced grid automation and cybersecurity; the Meralco Data Platform (MDP) leveraging big data and AI to optimize operations; and MIDAS, its AI-powered interactive assistant enhancing customer engagement.
“Digital transformation isn’t transformative because of platforms and applications,” said Meralco Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Ferdinand O. Geluz. “It is transformative because it removes friction from people’s lives and adds value to their daily experiences.”
At the Mobile World Congress 2025, Meralco unveiled its 7Ds Digital Transformation Strategy, which integrates seven pillars—Digital Customer, Digital Grid, Digital Employee, Digital Enterprise, Data Platforms and AI, Digital Infrastructure, and Digital Communications—to modernize the country’s power distribution network.
Global Partnerships for Smarter Energy
To advance these initiatives, Meralco collaborates with global technology leaders. Partnering with Itron, Inc., Meralco is deploying an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) solution across Metro Manila, enabling near real-time two-way communication between operations and customer endpoints. The system improves outage response, billing accuracy, and energy transparency.
Meralco also continues to explore low-carbon pathways, including nuclear energy. Its Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) program evaluates multiple approaches—from large-scale greenfield projects to small modular reactors (SMRs) and possible rehabilitation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant. Collaborations with international partners like KEPCO, DL Engineering & Construction, and EDF support the exploration of these technologies for both on-grid and off-grid applications.
Innovation as a Culture
Innovation Month demonstrated that Meralco’s approach is cultural, not ceremonial. Projects likeProject NIMBUS* (the overall Innovation Awards 2025 champion) strengthened grid resilience through employee-led initiatives, while other finalists—Team Mobile Eyesite, Periscope, and KAPIT Lang—showcased breakthroughs across customer experience, enterprise efficiency, and environmental safety.
“Here at Meralco, innovation isn’t a week-long celebration. It’s a mindset and a culture we build together,” said Rocky D. Bacani, Senior Vice President and Head of Information, Communication, Technology & Transformation.
Preparing the Next Generation of Energy Innovators
The IDOL Hackathon highlighted Meralco Power Academy’s commitment to nurturing future problem-solvers. The second-place project, “Alisto,” developed an IoT platform for monitoring appliances and early fire risk detection, while third-place VoltGuard provided smart phone-based analytics to monitor unattended devices. These initiatives demonstrate how the next generation can translate digital ideas into practical, real-world solutions for energy and safety challenges.
Orchestrating the Intelligent Grid
The month concluded with Tech Talk, themed “Orchestrating the Intelligent Grid: Shaping the Future of Distributed Energy,” where experts from Salesforce, Tesla Southeast Asia, and AWS explored how distributed energy resources like solar and battery storage are transforming utilities. Discussions highlighted that building a flexible, two-way grid is essential to meet decarbonization goals while delivering reliable service to consumers.

“By embracing technology, sustainability, and collaboration, we’re not just keeping the lights on,” Geluz said. “We’re illuminating possibilities. We’re empowering communities. We’re shaping the Philippines’ energy future.”
