The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has expressed its intent to partner with Batangas II Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BATELEC II), submitting a proposal to support the cooperative’s operations and improve service reliability in the province.
During a recent media briefing, Arnel Casanova, Meralco senior vice president and chief external and government affairs officer, confirmed that they had submitted both technical and commercial offers to BATELEC II as early as August 2024.
Meralco is currently waiting for clarification from the cooperative regarding the structure and timeline of the selection process.
While no final decision has been made by BATELEC II, the cooperative is widely seen as a potential candidate for private sector engagement due to persistent concerns over service quality and system reliability.
Meralco’s proposed entry comes amid broader discussions about the role of private investment in strengthening the country’s electric cooperatives, especially in high-growth and underdeveloped regions.
