The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has announced a partnership with the Armed Forces of the Philippines Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM) to establish a military reservist unit composed of Meralco personnel.
The initiative, formalized through a memorandum of agreement, will lead to the creation of the Meralco AFP Affiliated Reserve Unit. This specialized unit will enable AFP to leverage Meralco’s expertise in power distribution and infrastructure to energize critical facilities and augment defense capabilities during emergencies.
“This only means that the task in handling or addressing the national security issues of our country is not only in the hands of a few, but is a shared responsibility by all,” said BGen. Ferdinand Geminic P. Ramirez, commander of AFPRESCOM, at the signing.
The Department of Energy’s Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella, a military reservist himself, witnessed the signing and lauded the move as a “must,” commending Meralco’s role in bolstering energy security.
Under the agreement, Meralco employees are encouraged to serve as reservists, with responsibilities that include protecting critical infrastructure, joining emergency response operations, and ensuring business continuity during national crises.
“This partnership is about ensuring energy resilience whether in times of natural calamities or manmade challenges,” said Froilan J. Savet, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks.
Meralco EVP and COO Ronnie L. Aperocho added, “Through this partnership, we can elevate Meralco’s emergency preparedness and disaster response capabilities. Rest assured that Meralco will not only keep the lights on, we stand ready to support the AFP and the Filipino people whenever we are needed.”
