To showcase the benefits of digitalization in its network, Manila Electric Co. (MERALCO) is set to roll out 5,000 smart meters across its franchise area after initially rolling out prepaid smart meters.
Under MERALCO’s Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) program, the electricity distributor seeks to deploy more smart meters, with possible areas including Sampaloc, Manila, and Pasig, where MERALCO has existing communication lines.
Other prospective areas for the pilot project include new townships or greenfield communities.
MERALCO EVP and COO Ronnie Aperocho said they already filed the full implementation plan with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) and are awaiting approval.
Through AMI, the two-way communication between the utility and its consumers is accessible, empowering customers to promote energy conservation. The said program also allows improved operational efficiency and meeting with energy industry programs.
The power supplier can cover the investment cost but continues to do some pencil pushing.
MERALCO said that to enable its smart grid initiatives, they are focusing on its AMI program since it would help utilities increase operational efficiency.
Smart meters provide distributed energy resources in their distribution network, speedy response time, and generation of up to thousands of data points daily.
Previously, MERALCO has deployed 140,000 smart meters as part of its prepaid electricity program.
