The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has awarded the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) the Platinum Paw Award in recognition of its dedication to promoting animal welfare, including the establishment of an animal welfare program and donations to the organization.
PAWS Executive Director Atty. Anna Cabrera said that the distribution utility (DU) firm began its animal advocacy efforts in 2001 when it permitted PAWS to create an animal shelter on its site at Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City.
Along with that, Meralco launched its “CATropa” program, designed to provide a safe environment for community animals.
This initiative includes the “Spay It Forward” campaign, which focuses on implementing Trap, Neuter, Vaccinate, and Return (TNVR) activities both within and outside of MERALCO’s operations.
“MERALCO embodies the company that walks the talk in terms of furthering the cause of animal welfare in our country, and we hope that other companies will follow suit in terms of incorporating animal welfare and caring for community animals in their corporate culture and policies,” said Cabrera.
MERALCO’s recognition highlights the importance of businesses taking an active role in the welfare of animals. As more companies look to integrate social good into their operations, the firm’s leadership in animal welfare serves as a model for corporate responsibility in the Philippines.
