GrabTaxi Electric has gone live in select parts of Metro Manila, marking a regulatory and operational milestone in the Philippines’ shift toward sustainable, low-emission public transport.
Grab Philippines officially launched its fully electric taxi fleet in partnership with EV Taxi Corp., deploying units in key business and commuter hubs including Makati, Taguig, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, and Pasay. The rollout marks the next phase of the company’s clean mobility efforts, following earlier electric vehicle (EV) pilot testing.
“This is not just about offering another ride option,” Grab Philippines Country Head Ronald Roda said in a statement posted on its website. “It’s about fundamentally changing the DNA of urban transport in the Philippines – one that aligns with our sustainability commitments, empowers Filipino commuters, and creates meaningful green livelihoods. Sustainability cannot be a distant ideal; it must be something you can book, ride, and feel today.”
Currently in beta phase, the service is available to select users only, with broader deployment expected later in the year. Grab said it also plans to roll out electric taxis and GrabCar EV units in Davao and Cagayan de Oro, extending its low-emission fleet beyond Metro Manila.
“As a local operator, we’re proud to be at the forefront of this transformation. Our partnership with Grab proves that when multinational platforms and local innovators work together, we can fast-track a cleaner, more inclusive future for transport – one that delivers value for both passengers and drivers alike,” EV Taxi Corp President Frankie Ang, for his part said.
In 2024, Grab conducted a pilot study with BYD Philippines to assess the operational and financial viability of EVs for both driver-partners and fleet operators. The findings helped shape its current phased deployment strategy, which includes infrastructure considerations such as charging access, maintenance readiness, and regulatory compliance.
The launch of GrabTaxi Electric supports national efforts to expand electric vehicle adoption, in line with the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) and the Department of Energy’s broader push for sustainable transport solutions.
As internal combustion engines continue to dominate Philippine roads, the presence of electric taxis offers commuters a glimpse of a cleaner, quieter, and more sustainable transport future.
