Mets Cold Storage Services, Inc. (Mets) has signed an agreement with First Gen Corporation to supply renewable geothermal energy to its cold storage facility in Cagayan de Oro City, marking another step in the company’s shift toward cleaner and more sustainable operations.
Under the deal signed on October 3, Mets will source up to 2,050 kilowatts (kW) of power from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plant, operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC) which is a subsidiary of First Gen. The supply will cover the facility’s existing electricity demand as well as its future expansion.
Located in Tablon, Cagayan de Oro, the Mets facility has a storage capacity of more than 7,100 metric tons and is part of the company’s expanding national cold chain network. These include sites in Cavite, Bulacan, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro.
Mets Chief Operating Officer Donna Robles said the partnership reflects the company’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its logistics operations while reducing both energy costs and carbon emissions.
“This partnership with First Gen allows us to ensure a stable power supply for our cold storage facilities while supporting our goal of using clean, renewable energy,” Robles said.
First Gen Assistant Vice President Arlene Sy-Soriano said the deal demonstrates how renewable energy can support essential industries like food preservation and logistics.
“Clean and reliable power is vital for cold storage operations that keep food and medicine safe,” she said. “This collaboration with Mets Cold Storage underscores how geothermal energy can strengthen both sustainability and reliability for the cold chain sector.”
First Gen, through its subsidiaries, has a geothermal portfolio of about 1,200 megawatts (MW) and over 400 MW of combined hydro, wind, and solar energy capacity. Together with Prime Infrastructure Capital, the company also operates four natural gas-fired power plants with a total capacity of 2,017 MW, providing flexibility and energy security to the grid.
