MGEN appoints new leaders to drive thermal power growth

Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGEN), Meralco’s power generation unit, is moving to strengthen its thermal power operations with new executive appointments, signaling a focus on operational excellence and sustainable growth.

Starting 1 October 2025, Felino “Lino” Bernardo will serve as President and CEO of MGEN Thermal. With extensive experience in the Philippine power sector, Bernardo is expected to guide the company in delivering reliable energy while meeting the country’s rising electricity demand.

Arnel Santos will also join MGEN Thermal as Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Officer. Santos brings more than 30 years of international experience in oil, chemicals, and energy, specializing in operational transformation, digital innovation, and ESG integration. His appointment is seen as a move to reinforce efficiency and sustainability across MGEN’s thermal operations.

Meanwhile, Jaime “Jimmy” Azurin, President of Global Business Power Corporation, will retire on 30 September 2025 after more than 20 years of service. Azurin will continue as an advisor until the end of the year to ensure a seamless leadership transition.

“This leadership transition marks an important milestone for MGEN’s thermal business as we strengthen our role in providing reliable energy today, while building the foundation for a sustainable future,” said Emmanuel V. Rubio, MGEN President and CEO. “With Lino’s deep industry expertise and Arnel’s global track record in operational transformation, we are further equipping the business to meet the Philippines’ growing power needs responsibly and efficiently.”

MGEN’s thermal business is part of a broader portfolio that includes renewable energy and natural gas assets, as well as stakes in Singapore’s PacificLight Power and an integrated LNG facility in Batangas. The company currently maintains a combined net sellable capacity of 5,068 MW.
