Meralco PowerGen Corporation (MGen), through its thermal subsidiary Panay Energy Development Corporation (PEDC), has completed the lighting of Iloilo City’s La Paz Football Ground—the first plaza-based football field in Western Visayas to meet international lighting standards.
The PHP 17.3-million project, undertaken in partnership with the Iloilo City Government and One Meralco Foundation (OMF), equips the football field with professional-grade lighting that allows for nighttime play, training, and tournaments. The system was formally switched on during the city’s Christmas lighting ceremony on November 13.
“It is a privilege for us to continue serving this community, not only through energy, but through initiatives that uplift lives and empower people,” said MGen President and CEO Emmanuel V. Rubio. “At MGEN, we believe that our role goes beyond generating power. It is about empowering people, strengthening communities, and lighting the path towards a better future.”
The Iloilo City Government, led by Mayor Raisa Trenas, will oversee the technical operations and maintenance of the newly lit facility. The project supports the city’s broader sports development efforts under the Iloilo City Sports Academy (ICSA) and Sports Kickstarter Program, which provide free training and opportunities for young athletes.
“When we see families here spending their afternoons practicing and their school activities under the bright lights and their sports tournaments, we are reminded that development is not just about structures or facilities. It’s about people. It’s about giving our spaces to dream and to grow.,” Mayor Trenas said. “Sports bring families together. They foster discipline, teamwork, and pride—the same values that will drive a city forward.”
She added that the lighting project will enable more tournaments and sports-related events in the evenings, supporting the city’s growing football culture and local sports businesses.
For PEDC, which operates a 278.4 MW coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City, the project reflects a sustained commitment to community development. The company has long supported the annual Christmas decorations at La Paz Plaza, aiming to strengthen community spirit and celebrate the holidays with residents.
