MGEN unit to invest PHP 8.42B in 192 MW solar project in Iloilo

LagunaSol Corp., a subsidiary of MGEN Renewable Energy Inc. (MGEN Renewables), is investing PHP 8.42 billion to develop a 192-megawatt (MW) solar power project in Iloilo to support ever-rising electricity demand in Visayas.

The Concepcion Solar Power Project, scheduled for operations by November 2027, will be built across 135 hectares in the municipality of Concepcion and will deploy around 300,960 photovoltaic modules.

The facility is intended to supply power to the Visayas grid, where electricity demand is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.5% through 2030, a pace that exceeds the growth in Luzon. The region is also expected to require an additional 1,700 MW of capacity by 2030, stressing the need for new generation projects.

In its regulatory filing with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, LagunaSol said it is adopting a flexible market strategy for the project.

The company is positioning the facility to participate in future rounds of the Department of Energy’s Green Energy Auction Program (GEAP) for the 2026–2029 delivery window, while also exploring the Retail Electricity Supply (RES) option- which would allow it to sell electricity directly to eligible industrial and commercial consumers.

LagunaSol noted that ensuring long-term grid stability will require increased investments in energy storage, with battery capacity requirements in the Visayas projected to grow from 35 MW to 969 MW by 2050.

Environmental baseline reviews have confirmed that the proposed site does not overlap with protected areas, Ramsar sites, or recognized cultural heritage zones.

Earlier this year, MGEN Renewables also presented to Iloilo officials a proposal for a 120-MW ground-mounted solar facility in Barangays Nipa and Lo-ong in Concepcion. The proposed site would cover about 135.40 hectares and was planned for interconnection with the NGCP Concepcion 138-kV substation.

The proposal was discussed during a meeting with Iloilo Governor Arthur Defensor Jr., along with representatives from MGEN Renewables, Green Dev Solutions, and provincial officials.

How will large-scale solar developments shape the future power supply in the Visayas?
