Mindoro Medical Center-Calapan, Inc. (MindoroMed) is set to become the first hospital in the Philippines to operate using both solar power and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), following an expanded partnership with EEI Power Corporation, the energy arm of EEI Corporation. This initiative marks a significant advancement in sustainable healthcare, particularly for off-grid regions like Mindoro.
The energy storage installation follows an earlier deal, under which EEI Power was awarded a contract to install a 518kWp solar PV rooftop system in MindoroMed, Robert Marlon T. Pereja, vice president and general manager of EEI Power, told Power Philippines.
Pereja said the setup, which will be completed in June, will enable MindoroMed to harness and store renewable energy, ensuring a reliable power supply even during outages or periods of low solar generation.
Given Mindoro’s off-grid status, the integration of BESS is crucial. It will allow the hospital to maintain continuous operations, reduce reliance on traditional electricity sources, and achieve significant cost savings. These savings can be redirected towards facility improvements and enhanced patient care.
EEI Power’s involvement in sustainable energy projects extends beyond MindoroMed. The company has also installed solar rooftop systems at other healthcare facilities, including a 145.2 kWp system at Dagupan Doctors Villaflor Memorial Hospital and a 376.2 kWp system at Mary Mediatrix Medical Center.
Looking ahead, EEI Power’s solar rooftop business is expected to grow significantly, with plans to expand its installed base from 4 MWp to 15 MWp by 2025. This growth is driven by rising electricity costs and a market shift towards sustainable energy.
This collaboration between EEI Power and MindoroMed not only sets a precedent for sustainable healthcare in the Philippines but also underscores the vital role of renewable energy in enhancing the resilience and efficiency of medical facilities, especially in off-grid areas.
