Metro Retail Stores Group, Inc. (MRSGI) is incorporating renewable energy, energy-efficient lighting, and water conservation into its operations in an effort to strengthen its commitment to environmental sustainability.
In a report by Manila Standard, MRSGI president and chief operating officer Manuel Alberto said that the firm is dedicated to integrating sustainability practices in all areas of its business as a way to create a lasting positive impact on the environment.
MRSGI has installed around 3 megawatt peak (MWp) of solar capacity in seven of its locations, enabling the company to provide about 15% of its energy demands through renewable energy sources.
Additionally, MRSGI’s move to implement LED lighting in nearly 20 stores has not only reduced operational expenses but also contributed to more sustainable business practices. With energy consumption down by 10%, the company saves around 830,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) monthly, supporting its long-term environmental goals.
These initiatives, supported by a capital investment of approximately Php 230 million, reflect MRSGI’s long-term commitment to embedding sustainability into its operations.
MRSGI began its sustainability efforts in 2017 by equipping its Super Metro Carcar store with solar panels, marking its initial move towards adopting renewable energy. Since then, the company has extended this initiative to seven additional locations, producing clean energy and significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 420 tons of carbon.
