NPC deploys 243 solar home systems to energize Tawi-Tawi communities

The National Power Corporation (NPC) has deployed 243 solar home systems (SHS) to remote island communities in Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi, bringing electricity to households in areas without reliable power access.

The initiative covers coastal sitios in Panggungan, Saluag, and Andulingan, benefiting around 1,774 individuals across 243 households.

The solar units were delivered on April 26 through coordination with the Sitangkai local government unit and the Philippine Marines, addressing logistical challenges in reaching geographically isolated areas.

Each SHS unit has a capacity of 50-watt peak, capable of providing up to 12 hours of electricity for basic household needs such as lighting, mobile phone charging, and radio use.

The deployment allows families to transition away from traditional energy sources such as gas lamps and small solar lamps, offering a safer and more reliable source of power.

The project forms part of NPC’s mandate to provide electricity to off-grid and underserved communities, particularly in areas where extending the main power grid is not feasible.

The Department of Energy (DOE) said the initiative supports broader efforts to achieve total electrification and expand access to clean energy in remote parts of the country.

Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin said the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to reaching even the most isolated communities.

“NPC’s initiative shows that no community is too remote to be reached by determined and coordinated government action,” she said.
