The National Electrification Administration (NEA) has signed a contract with Spanish engineering consultancy Osprel SL to conduct a feasibility study on connecting Camiguin Island to the Mindanao electricity grid through submarine power cables.
The agreement was formalized during a ceremonial signing on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at the NEA Building in Diliman, Quezon City. NEA Administrator Antonio Mariano Almeda and Osprel SL Chief Executive Officer Maria Inmaculada Blázquez Garcia signed the contract, witnessed by Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Mylene Capongcol and Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Miguel Utray Delgado, among other stakeholders.
The project will include electrical, bathymetric, meteorological, and environmental studies aimed at assessing the viability of a more stable and integrated power supply for the island province.
According to the contract, “A detailed technical project will be drawn up for the optimized submarine connection that will enable the development of the project and its future construction. This connection will allow the integration of renewables in Camiguin.”
Camiguin, located in the Bohol Sea off the northern coast of Mindanao, currently relies on the Camiguin Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CAMELCO) for its energy distribution. The proposed interconnection could enhance the reliability of power supply and open the door for renewable energy integration on the island.
The study is viewed as a strategic first step toward the long-term goal of infrastructure development and grid integration in one of the country’s geographically isolated provinces.
