New Renewable Energy Project Brings Savings and Stability to Samal

A new renewable energy project in Samal City is being both an economic and energy success. The local government’s PHP50 million solar-powered parking structure, located at the Samal City Hall grounds, has already generated over PHP132,000 in electricity savings just weeks after its formal launch back in May 2025.

As reported in the city’s government website, the structure is part of the city’s effort to expand its use of clean energy while also reducing dependence on traditional power sources. The system is designed to contribute to the local grid, which helps augment Samal’s power supply amid frequent outages.

The solar facility features a 500 kVA grid-tied system made up of 1,036 solar panels, each rated at 450 watts. It occupies 2,690 square meters, doubling as a shaded parking lot that can accommodate more than 190 vehicles, making efficient use of both space and resources.

The initiative was officially inaugurated back on February 6, 2025. It was jointly developed by the City Government of Samal, HG Agri Industrial Machineries, and Greenergy Development Corporation. Since its inauguration, it has been operating continuously and feeding solar power into the local grid.

According to city officials, the project not only enhances energy security but also demonstrates the city’s commitment to climate-resilient infrastructure. For outgoing Mayor Al David Uy, the solar carpark marks a significant legacy as he transitions to a different political role.

The project reflects a growing trend amongst local government units across the Philippines to invest in renewable energy solutions that are both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
