No power shortage seen during Malampaya shutdown

IEMOP

The Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) sees no shortage in power supply while the Malampaya gas field suspends production from October 2-22.

IEMOP, the operator of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), pointed out that supply levels are generally enough to meet power demand, based on its projection for the period from August 25-December 25.

Available generating capacity for Luzon and Visayas this October in particular could go as high as 15,807 megawatts (MW), while demand would peak at 13,655MW for a reserve margin of 2,152MW.

Malampaya supplies around 30% of the Luzon Grid’s electricity needs and around 20% of the entire country’s.

IEMOP’s forecast for Mindanao is separate pending the completion of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project. NGCP aims to finish the project by the first quarter of next year.
