NPC, SunSmart Solar join forces for off-grid renewable energy deployment

The National Power Corporation (NPC) has formalized a partnership with SunSmart Solar Power Technology, Inc. to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy in the country’s most remote areas. The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing power solutions within the NPC’s Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) service areas, which cover off-grid and missionary electrification sites across the Philippine archipelago.

Under the agreement, the NPC and SunSmart will collaborate on the development of hybrid power systems and the expansion of rural electrification. The partnership focuses on conducting site-specific feasibility studies, improving data availability for unserved locations, and building institutional capacity for microgrid planning.

SunSmart, an integrated renewable energy firm, is expected to leverage its expertise in solar solutions, hybrid mini-grids, and smart street lighting to support these initiatives.

NPC President and CEO Fernando Martin Y. Roxas noted that the collaboration is a strategic move to fast-track the government’s off-grid renewable energy goals. “We are fortunate to have this partnership that will help us do things in the shortest possible time,” Roxas said.

Meanwhile, SunSmart Chairman and CEO William Che Hon Ngai and President Jenny Lin Maaño-Ngai expressed their commitment to supporting national development through these sustainable energy projects.

As an attached agency of the Department of Energy, the NPC remains mandated to provide power to the farthest islands in the Philippines. This latest partnership signals a shift toward integrating more advanced, “smart” technologies into the country’s missionary electrification strategy to ensure more reliable and sustainable energy for underserved Filipino communities.

How do you think this partnership will impact the reliability of power in the Philippines’ most remote islands? Let’s discuss.
