The One Meralco Foundation marked the energization of 432 additional low-income households in Quezon City through a ceremonial switch-on program held on December 17, 2025, at Quezon City Hall.
The initiative, implemented under OMF’s Household Electrification Program, was carried out in coordination with the Quezon City local government and officials of Manila Electric Company (Meralco), replacing unsafe and informal electricity arrangements with compliant connections ahead of the holiday season.
Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said access to electricity plays a critical role in improving living conditions and protecting residents from risks associated with illegal wiring.
“Ang kuryente ay hindi lang simpleng serbisyo—ito ay isang karapatan na nagbibigay ng mas ligtas at mas maayos na pamumuhay para sa bawat pamilya,” Belmonte said.
Beneficiaries came from several barangays and communities, including South Triangle, Escopa 3, 185 West Riverside, 24 F. Carlos, Sitio Militar, K-9 Compound, Greenland, and Tumana. Prior to the program, many households relied on submetering or tapping into neighboring power lines, arrangements that posed safety and reliability concerns.
Meralco and OMF officials said the electrification effort strengthens coordination between the foundation, Meralco business centers, and the city government to address long-standing access and safety issues in densely populated urban areas.
Through its Household Electrification Program, OMF said it has now energized more than 80,000 low-income households nationwide, supporting the government’s target of achieving 100% household electrification by 2028.
As similar electrification efforts continue in urban communities, how can partnerships between utilities, foundations, and local governments further reduce safety risks while expanding access to reliable electricity?
