The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has given the green light to four transmission projects by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), with a total capital expenditure of P5 billion. The projects, which include the Granada, Sumangga, and La Carlota substations, as well as the Nagsaag-Tumana transmission line, aim to prevent power overloading, enhance supply reliability, and meet growing electricity demand in key areas.

Among those approved by the ERC is the Granada 230-kilovolt (kV) substation project with a total budget of P1.943 billion. Expected to be completed by August 31, 2028, this project will be constructed to ease transformer congestion at the Bacolod Substation, ensuring a more stable power supply for the growing electricity needs of Bacolod and surrounding areas.

In Leyte, the Sumangga 138 kV substation has been approved with a P1.361 billion budget to help reduce the load on the Ormoc Substation’s power transformers and alleviate stress on the Ormoc-Baybay 69 kV transmission line, enhancing overall system efficiency. This facility is scheduled for completion by March 31, 2028.

Additionally, the project is aligned with N-1 contingency standards, which ensure grid stability even in the event of unexpected disruptions.

Another approved project, the P1.129 billion La Carlota 138 kV substation, is set to boost power reliability in Negros Occidental. This project will help address overloading on the Bacolod-San Enrique 69 kV transmission line and is expected to be operational by August 31, 2028.

Meanwhile, the Nagsaag-Tumana 69 kV transmission line, with a P583.5 million investment, is being developed to support the rising electricity demand in Eastern Pangasinan. The project, which is expected to be completed by November 30, 2025, will ease congestion on the existing transmission network and provide more stable power distribution in the province.

With energy consumption rising due to urban expansion and economic growth, NGCP’s newly approved projects are crucial in ensuring that power distribution remains efficient and resilient. By reinforcing the capacity of substations and transmission lines, these initiatives will minimize power interruptions and system overloading, ultimately benefiting both residential and industrial consumers.

These projects also align with NGCP’s long-term strategy to modernize the grid and keep up with increasing energy requirements. With the ERC’s approval in place, NGCP is expected to move forward with construction and development, adhering to strict timelines to ensure timely completion.

How do you think these transmission infrastructure upgrades will impact electricity supply in Negros, Leyte, and Pangasinan? Will these projects be enough to prevent power interruptions and ensure grid stability?
