Power PH – PGPC Begins Geothermal Drilling in Mt. Malinao, Albay

Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPC), Southeast Asia’s pioneering commercial geothermal energy provider, has begun exploratory drilling operations at Mt. Malinao in Albay. The development marks a significant push in the company’s effort to expand renewable energy generation across Luzon.

Using the Pioneer 1 drilling rig, PGPC is assessing the geothermal potential of Mt. Malinao, a site projected to supply up to 49 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy once fully developed.

Mt. Malinao is among several new concession areas PGPC is developing across Luzon. Collectively, these sites have the potential to deliver up to 300 MW of renewable energy to the region in the coming years, a move that could significantly ease the island’s dependence on fossil fuels and bolster the national grid with clean, reliable power.

PGPC’s continued investments in geothermal energy underscore its long-standing leadership in the sector, having established the first commercial geothermal operations in Southeast Asia.

What are your thoughts on PGPC’s geothermal expansion? Could Mt. Malinao signal a turning point for clean energy in the Philippines? Join the conversation and share your insights on this development.
