The Philippines is charging ahead with its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions, boasting 912 public charging stations as of March 31, 2025, with a significant number located in the National Capital Region.
The Department of Energy (DOE) is spearheading efforts to grow this network further, rolling out fresh regulations and engaging the public to create a reliable and eco-friendly EV ecosystem.
Recognizing the need for a robust regulatory framework, the Implementing Guidelines on Obligations of Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) Providers and EVCS Requirements, Specifications, and Interconnectivity (IG-ORSI) are set to also be published this month to ensure proper quality and standardization among EVCS.
To keep the momentum going, the DOE has scheduled public consultations for the second quarter of 2025. These discussions will tackle practical steps like placing charging stations at fuel stops for easier access, syncing the Charging Infrastructure Development Plan (CIDP) with the Distribution Development Plan (DDP) to balance grid demands and ensure steady service, and adding chargers in parking zones to ease worries about running out of power on the road.
The 912 EVCS established is nothing more than a first step in the DOE’s plans. They have publicly stated their goal is to establish 7300 ECVS by 2028: “Our goal of deploying over 7,000 EV charging stations by 2028 is ambitious but achievable. By combining infrastructure development with public engagement, we can accelerate the transition to EVs and build a cleaner, more sustainable transportation sector,” said Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick T. Aquino.
The DOE remains committed to creating a supportive environment for EV adoption, fostering innovation, and ensuring that the country is well-equipped for the future of clean mobility.
The use of EVs has been gaining traction worldwide due to its benefits such as reduced emissions, lower running costs, and longer lifespan compared to traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
